Insurance

There are no specific health risks when traveling to Italy. EU visitors are privileged to get a valid European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) which covers state-provided medical treatment. You will need an individual E111 form available at the main post office for each person travelling. Bird flus are common in southern Italy & Sicily. Even though there is a low risk of human infection, prevention is better than cure so avoid close contact with wild, caged and domestic birds. Cook poultry and egg dishes thoroughly.

It is advised to get an insurance policy before travelling to cover against theft, loss, illness or injury. Some insurance policies and private medical schemes may cover your possessions when abroad or you may look for travel insurance companies that will provide cover for baggage loss, tickets, cash, as well as trip cancellation. In most cases though, insurance do not include dangerous sports such as scuba diving, windsurfing or trekking, unless an extra premium is paid.
