There are around 1, 200 museums in France which welcome an estimate of 70 million visitors annually. The Louvre, Chateau de Versailles and the Musee d'Orsay have around 15 million of visitors yearly. These museums are protected by the Ministry of Culture. Many French enjoy going to museums during weekends. It is better for a foreign traveler to schedule his museum visits during weekdays to avoid big crowds. It is advisable to get a carte musee (museums and monuments card) in advance from the Paris Tourist Office to avoid long lines when visiting a museum in Paris.
